5 Reasons Adult Coloring Books are so Popular! A Fun Friday Review

Why are adult coloring books so popular and one of the hottest trends?  Most of us associate coloring with little kids practicing their motor skills and learning what red, yellow, blue and green look like. Adults are the ones reminding children to color inside the lines.  Or so it seemed…

The trend of Adult Coloring Books is raising eyebrows from every age segment and has brought out secret closet coloring enthusiasts from just about everywhere.  In case you haven’t noticed, the very first thing that many stores are showcasing on prominent front entrance displays and aisle end-caps are sections labeled “Adult Coloring Books and Coloring Pencils”.  I had to investigate for myself what in the world was going on and here are my discoveries.

I broke down and bought an adult coloring book with some Prima Color Watercolor pencils for around $15.00.  My first book was Animorphia: An Extreme Coloring and Search Challenge by Kerby Rosanes.  I was on the hunt for a chicken theme coloring book and ended up purchasing this book instead.  I couldn’t really find what I wanted; however, this one has 2 chickens in it and the whole book reminded me of a hidden objects book.  Sounds exciting so far!

At the time I was nursing a wounded chicken and my heart had been broken over the situation.  I colored one of the chickens to match the injured chicken.  By doing this I transferred some of the emotional energy that I was feeling inside from a real life situation, and was able to move it to the activity of coloring in a book.  Suddenly, I found comfort through a difficult time and the coloring showed me an appreciation for Adult Coloring Books.  I think I am now starting to understand a few things about this fad.

All hobbies connect individuals on an emotional level and bring feelings of relaxation, comfort, and happiness; otherwise, we wouldn’t have those hobbies. I discovered as many already have, that the Adult Coloring Books fad is here to stay and is now ranked one of the biggest trends!

Here are 5 great reasons you should take a break and color with the rest of the world.

  • Provides an outlet for stress and busy life.  Stress is part of life and we need ways to decompress.  Have you thought about coloring on your lunch break at work?  How about after dealing with a stressful situation in your life at the end of the day?  Admit it, life is not always easy; so instead of decompressing by watching TV, try investing some time into coloring.
  • Provides a sense of creativity.  Finding the right coloring book is key. Have you ever looked at a DIY project someone has done and thought, “Wow! I wish I could do that!”  Gardening is a great example where we all hear, “I don’t have a green thumb.”   Let me tell you a secret; we all have our reserves even if we don’t openly admit it. Here’s your chance to shine because there is no right or wrong way to color.  Go for it and you can be super artistic or just plain and simple.  In addition, you may learn how to blend or mix colors and learn something new.
Jordan Gaines Lewis is a science writer and a Neuroscience Ph.D. student at the Penn State College of Medicine said, “In part, it’s a way for people who have never felt very artsy to literally add some more color into their lives.”  You can read more here.
  • Provides an emotional connection and relationship building.  This is my favorite reason because you can spend quality time with children at their level and cultivate stronger relationships.
How about the elderly? Many can’t do the things we may take for granted on a daily basis, so break out the Adult Coloring Book and find a simple picture– and color it with them.  It gives the elderly a sense of being, a purpose!  If they can’t hold the pencils, you can help them and both of you will benefit on a wonderful relational level.
I have a friend that has been lonely and feeling down lately, so I arranged to have a dinner with her next week.  What a great opportunity to take a coloring book and some pencils with me!  I can also use that time to bond and encourage her through conversation.
  • Provides an inexpensive hobby and it’s easy to take with you anywhere.  Nobody said you have to buy the most expensive set of color pencils or watercolors.  If you choose to do that very thing, that is up to each individual.  It can be as simple as Googling “free printable adult coloring pages” and breaking out your kids broken crayons. Of course, you could land somewhere in the middle and grab an Adult Coloring book on Amazon and some decent watercolor pencils like I did.  It’s as easy as tucking them into your purse or backpack when on the go.
  • Provides fun for anyone and makes a fantastic gift.  I love candles and lotions, but have you considered giving an Adult Coloring Book and some pencils to a friend?  How about someone in the hospital?  Birthday, Christmas, Valentine’s Day or Easter basket gift?  After you give it to them, offer to sit and color with them.  With modern technology we often forget to spend valuable time sitting and interacting with others; so here is an awesome opportunity for you to work on strengthening your relationships.
